I know it is the least-loved Pixar film, but I have always had a soft corner for the original Cars. The story is certainly trite and it is not even half as good as some other entries in Pixar’s filmography, but something about that film really appeals to me. It may be the sense of melancholy that pervades the town of Radiator Springs, or it may be the lived-in feeling that the setting of the film evokes. Whatever it is, I certainly don’t loathe the film as much as some other people do.

All that said, the new trailer for Cars 2 hit a couple of days ago, but I waited to post about it till an HD version came along. Yahoo! Movies got one today, and you can have a look at it after the jump.

It looks really, really uninspired. Every time I see some new footage from this film, I get this feeling that it is just borne out of commercial needs and not storytelling impulses. There’s no denying the merchandising opportunities that come with a film like this… but I always expected a bit more from Pixar. Look at the puerile bathroom gags that populate the trailer and tell me if that isn’t the same thing we all criticize Dreamworks for. It’s a shame really.

Anyway, see the trailer and tell me in the comment section what you think of it.
